Partial Default Stress (PDS) in Verbs

A number of verbs have default stress in the infinitive, past tense and Я form, but have exceptional stress in the other present/simple future tense forms, giving the following pattern for PDS verbs:

ходить default stress

ходил, а, о, и default stress

хожу default stress

ходишь exception

ходит exception

ходим exception

ходите exception

ходят exception

Up until now we have simply treated each exception above as an individual word with no connection to her sister words. However, it's obvious that if you know the combination хожу - ходишь then you can predict the stress of the other forms of the present tense, since they follow the pattern shown above. We show the exceptional PDS forms in orange:

никто не сердится no one gets mad compare with сердиться, сердился, сержусь all with default

никогда не научишься you will never learn but научиться, научился, научусь

Words with orange letters have default stress in other forms of the word. Verbs that have stress on the root in all forms just have the vowel marked in red:

радоваться не следовало I shouldn't have been happy

As with all exceptional forms, PDS roots will be marked 10 times in the text and then just occasionally thereafter as a reminder.

And finally, note that the word хотеть is unique in that it is PDS only in the singular: хочу, хочешь, хочет but хотим, хотите, хотят.
