Default Stress: review

According to the default rule, Russian words have stress on the final stem vowel, that is, right before the ending. Verbs have stress right after the root. Examples from this section:

*Note: тайком is a single word with no ending. Stress falls on the final stem vowel.

However, one need not read very far to see that a number of words do not have default stress. For many of these, there exists generalizations which account for their extraordinary behavior. Examples:

Nouns:

зверей This is the gen pl ending of a feminine noun in -ь, many of which have end stress in the plural (see PDS Feminine Nouns).

ежом The letter -o- following a husher is always stressed (see ЧО)

в оцепенении the suffix -ий (in all case endings) is not stressed (see ИЙ).

ошейник the suffix -ник- is not stressable (see НИК)

Verbs:

поджаривался The suffix -ива- is not stressable (see ЫВА)

выгнать The perfective prefix вы- is always stressed (see ВЫ)

дрессировать The suffix -ир- is stressable (see ОВА)

Adjectives:

другой nom sg ending -ой is always stressed (see ОЙ)

Adverbs:

раньше After hushers the comparative suffix -e is not stressable (see COMP)

Knowing a few generalizations about unstressable and always stressed suffixes can increase your knowledge of the stress of Russian words without having to look them up in a dictionary.
